The main focus of our R&D group is to provide support for the consultant in the field. We rely heavily on our own testing of varieties, fertility programs and crop protectants in order to make better agronomic decisions. Our customers look to us as an unbiased source of information to go along with data they receive from seed companies and university tests. We are currently building a database of corn knowledge with the goal of working with growers in corn management. For that reason, most of our research data is proprietary. Contact scottvansickle at wheattech.com if you would be interested in purchasing our complete management data.

Some of our projects are funded by companies that wish to get the results out to the public. We are happy to share these studies with you. Click on the following link to view recent corn projects:

In 2006, Wheat Tech Research planted, managed and harvested five additional corn trials. The locations were chosen to be representative of the predominant lanscape positions and soil types cropped in the Southern Tier of Kentucky. Companies entered only a core group of varieites to be evaluated in these trials. The results are below:

Summation of 2006 Supplemental Variety Trials

2007 has been a very difficult year in which to raise crops in much of the geography that we cover in Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee. For the corn crop here in the southern tier of Kentucky, it has been especially difficult. The year started off dramatically, with very warm soil temperatures and extremely good planting conditions, beginning in early March. Many growers took advantage of this, but unfortunately felt the wrath of nature with the four night freeze over Easter weekend. This freeze even killed the majority of the corn planted prior to March 28th. Fields decimated by the frost were replanted in April and good stands were established. Through much of the summer, rain has been spotty at best. Combine that with a June through August that has had the highest average daily temperature since 1952 and you have corn that became very stressed and died prematurely. Yields will be quite variably this year, based in large part to rainfall patterns and how varieties managed this lack of moisture.

2007 Corn Variety Trials: three location average

2007 Corn Variety Trials: four location average

The 2008 corn crop was extremely variable across the Southern Tier of Kentucky. Growers in our corn consulting program had 100+ acres field averages above 200 bu/a and some that were below 100 bu/a. The underling difference was rainfall. The corn in many areas began to twist in late May and it wasn't until July when the area received the next significant rainfall event. Below are results from each of the six locations, as well as an overall average. Please call the office if you need more information.
